Great May Catches Grouper Season Opens

Words can not really describe how good the fishing has been in May. The month is coming to an end and as I sit here and write this report I reflect back on the last few weeks and think about the awesome customers and some of the great catches we have had. It wasn’t always easy as we were dealt with different scenarios on every charter this month. Some days it was the wind, tide or moon phase and some days it was a combination of all that had me working both hard and smart to get my customers on the fish.
Every morning when I wake up I have a plan in mind for the day. Those plans don’t always pan out as things can change pretty quick over night. The places we caught fish the day before may be inaccessible due to windy conditions. The tides may be off due to the moon phase. Catching bait may be more of a chore than normal or even worse every spot you attempt to go to may already be taken by another fisherman out there trying to fulfill his dream of catching the big one. It happens and you have to be able to deal with it.
There was a time when the above scenarios would leave me scratching my head. To be honest even after all the years I have been fishing Tampa Bay they still do. That is when I have to reach way back into my fishing memories and come up with plan B.

Plan B came into effect a few times this month and it paid off big. I strayed form the normal approach of shallow water fishing and went deep into the fishing vault of memories and fished a different style and places. The result were some nice catches of Snook, Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, Spanish Mackerel and several other species.
We caught several Snook this past month in the upper 30s and pushing close to 40 inches and 20lbs and over. Some beautiful Redfish came to the boat also.

We are now approaching June and the 1st of the month marks the opening of Grouper season. In June and while the season is open we will be spending time targeting Grouper, Mangrove Snapper, Spanish Mackerel and a variety of other species that make great table fare.
